The Grandma Syndrome: Uh-Oh, Is it Starting? (A Halloween Post)

by Cyma Shapiro

I’ve withstood the ravages of time:  I have not yet been called “Grandma,” am still courted by those younger than I, and I still do not get the looks that others often get (“others” with gray hair, wrinkles, and sagging bodies).  So far, I’m sitting like the Cheshire Cat, grinning from ear-to-ear about my little dirty secret. (You know, the one about my real age).

However, I do believe that it is all about to change. (Uh-OH!) […]

What If…

by Cyma Shapiro

Until yesterday, I would swear to it that I was past all the “What If’s.” That is, the nagging, endless questions that plagued me for the last few decades. Here are a few: […]

A Night in the Life of a Mommy Blogger (8:40 p.m.)

by Cyma Shapiro

My children off to bed, I’m here, like so many of you, able to enter the (world of the) Internet and do some “research.” Follow my journey.

We will soon welcome, Dear Reader, the work of Karen Hug-Nagy, whose posts will appear shortly on our site. While researching her work, I stumbled on Jen Singer’s http://www.Mommasaid.net. She welcomes her viewers by saying, “Welcome to Mommablog, my blog about a mom’s life, just like yours.” A click on her Guest Post link immediately led me to Meagan Francis, author of the new book “The Happiest Mom” and the blog site of the same name: http://thehappiestmom.com – a site I visited for quite a while, trying to see if the moniker fit (me).

Am I Invisible? (Or, Where Are We All Heading?)

by Cyma Shapiro

I think the dilemma started when my Physician’s Assistant (PA) of ten years left my MD’s office last month for another medical practice. Within a flash, all my years of personal coddling, instant communication (I was given her “inside” phone number) and very good health care were eradicated for this: I am now just another number, another cog in the wheel/larger scheme of things.  Right now, I feel very, very unimportant. […]

(I’m a) Midlife Soccer Mom!

by Cyma Shapiro

OK.  I’ve said it and it’s out. I think I’ve become one of “them.” The transformation was subtle, but quick. Last week, I looked back and saw that it had already happened. It was really quite painless. I actually suggest that you try it. The “it” is letting go. The result? I’m now a Midlife Soccer Mom. Quite an image, huh? […]

Looking Back

by Cyma Shapiro

I just celebrated my 15th anniversary. This milestone year is supposed to be immortalized with crystal.  For several weeks, I endeavored to buy my husband something made out of the real thing.  However, not finding anything that resonated with me, I settled on a very tiny interesting translucent crystal (the stone), and vowed to emphasize the reflection this occasion and gift might provide me. […]

“How Old Are You?”

by Cyma Shapiro

I’ve been blessed with great genes and a presence which often appears years younger than I really am.

I’ve also been blessed with a daughter (like so many others) whose mouth regurgitates and replays recently heard tidbits.  Anywhere. Everywhere.  Anytime.  All-the-time.

With this in mind, I’ve chosen not to tell her my chronological age. Not yet. […]

Mother’s Day Cards (Revisited)

by Cyma Shapiro

(Dear Reader: I wrote the blog post below last year for MotherhoodLater, and wanted to reread it this year.  It’s amazing how one year can change things;  how motherhood makes us forget what happened when our children were younger or youngest; how they came into our lives and what changes we needed to make once they were here.  I can honestly say that I am nearly fully comfortable in my Motherhood-clothes, a role that I played well in the beginning, but one that I now don each day with ease in the same way that I donned singlehood for many, many years. I won’t say that there aren’t days I wish I could wake up, yawn, and go down for coffee all on my own time, my own rhythm. I will say, however, that I’m the happiest that I’ve ever been – now that I have children. […]
