Imagine Oprah saying in an interview that she didn’t think African-Americans deserved equal rights. Or, Gloria Steinem saying that women should be barefoot and pregnant.
Talk about taking way too many steps backward.
I’m not saying Dolce and Gabbana are as important as the two women above, especially in reference to those ladies’ fierce opinions and ardent support of their respective causes. D&G are, however, fashion icons with a platform to speak, and in the gay world (of which I’m a member), fashion is almost like a religion of sorts.
I find it interesting that people, like Dolce and Gabbana, who excuse their words under “freedom of speech,” are generally people who are espousing words of hate. I could completely see D&G’s point of view if they were some red state-heterosexual-morons with a complete lack of education and brain function. They are not, however, and that is what is so disturbing.
To say that my children are “synthetic” couldn’t be further from the truth. My children were born out of great love and biology. It was our love for each other and our love of family that brought me and my husband to that decision. Our children were not the result of unprotected teenage sex in the back of a pickup truck somewhere in Appalachia.
We made a heartfelt decision to start a family in our early forties while living in a metropolitan city in California. And it was the smartest decision we have ever made.
Going through the process of conception at our fertility clinic was both painful and glorious.
Seeing our embryos and watching them being implanted into our surrogate gave us joy and hope. We left the clinic every time convinced we were indeed pregnant. And with each failed attempt (there were six failures in total including two chemical pregnancies), a small piece of our hearts was stolen. When we had a confirmed pregnancy via surrogate, we were beyond elated.
Both times.
As two men in love with each other, all we only ever wanted was to have a family together. We fought through hate within our own families as well as our society to get married and have children. Why so much hate? Because of people’s inability to understand why we wanted what most everyone else also wants.
A lot of this ignorance toward us came from those church going people who professed love of all of “God’s children” …all the time judging and hating us. I find this so obviously and completely hypocritical.
I was born into a Catholic family, so for all intents and purposes, I am Catholic. I don’t practice this religion because I find it filled with hypocrisy…a Vatican swimming in riches while so many people in the world go hungry every day, the pedophilia that was covered up and often swept under the rug, the judgements made in regards to me as a gay man, who I love and how we live, etc, etc. I am not saying all religion is bad, but I am saying all religion is governed by man -the most fallible creature of all.
As I once read, however, you cannot argue with stupid. Which brings me to D&G.
I don’t like to name call because it lacks maturity and intellect. So I won’t call them stupid. I will however say that D&G lack the intelligence to comprehend the very simple ideas that are the threads of our society making their ill-fitting statements truly out of style with the current trend of a family, valued.
